Linux Back ground
It is a freely distributeable verion of UNIX originated by
Linus Travalds at the University of Helsinki in Finland. It was inspired
by MINIX, a Seventh Edition-compatibale UNIX written by Andrew Tanenbaum
and generally follows System V conventions. Its further development has
been helped by UNIX programmers and wizards across the Internet. it includes
a great deal of code developed by GNU project as well as XFree86 verion
of X. Several different distributions of Linux the best known being Redhat
and Debian. Linux is coverd by the
GNU General Puplic License discussed below.
The GNU Project
The GNU project aims to develop a complete UNIX compatible
software system. It is operated by the Free Software Foundation, an organization
founded by Richard Stallman. Stallman has written much of GNU software
himself. All GNU software is covered by the GNU General Public License
(GPL) according to the terms of that license, anyone can modify the software
and distribute his or her own version of it. The essential constraint is
that no one can prevent a recipient of the software from further
distributing it for free. This right attaches not just to the original
software but to all modified derivatives of it. Anyone who distributes
the software or a derivative, whether free or for a fee, is also obligated
to make the source code available for no more than the coast of copying
it. The license dose not prevent a vendor from making a handsome
profit from distributing GNU software only ensures that anyone else
can distribute the same software at lower price or at no price at all.
Software covered by the GPL is often said to be copylefted.
